Thicker Than Water

Thicker Than Water by Brigid Kemmerer–Published by: Allen and Unwin Publication date: January 2016–Price: $16.99 AUD–Image sourced from Goodreads

Thomas Bellweather would never knowingly hurt someone he loved. But when his mother is murdered inside their locked house, he is the only suspect. Even his cop-stepdad can’t protect him forever in a new town where no one knows or trusts him.

The only person who believes him is Charlotte, sister to three protective cops and straight-up dangerous to Thomas. She knows there are pieces missing in the puzzle, and she’s determined to find them.

But finding things that are hidden could get them both killed.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book through a competition held by the publisher Allen and Unwin.

I don’t want to say too much in this review because it is a crime thriller and so it’s better to go into the knowing as little as possible! But please read this amazing book with a little romance and a lot of mystery.

Setting. Small town by the water… so characteristic of Brigid Kemmerer’s writing! And absolutely perfect for the crime thriller with supernatural elements and a little romance.

Characters. This book has that wonderful ability to make the reader sympathise with the characters, both good and bad. There is the perfect love/hate relationship between the reader and the ‘villainous’ cops created through the duel perspectives. You can really relate to the narrating protagonists. And one of the things I love most about this book is that you don’t know who the true villain is until the end!

Plot. I love a good murder mystery and I loved that this one didn’t get really scary until I was reading it alone, in bed, at 3am… But seriously, I love this book! The supernatural elements came in a little late for me, but this just added to the suspense.

Writing. I love duel perspective narrations, and especially in this book. I did feel that the plot was dragged out a bit and that most of the excitement happened at the end, which is unusual for a standalone book, so I’m really hoping that Thicker Than Water will turn out to be the first novel in a series!!

5/5 stars
