One Year Anniversary | Monthly Recommendations

Happy Birthday to the Monthly Recommendations Goodreads group! To celebrate, this month we recommend a mash up of all the topics from the past year. This is pretty exciting for me because I’ve only been participating in the group since June, so this gives me a chance to recommend books from the topics I have missed.

This group was created by Kayla from Kayla Rayne and Trina from Between Chapters. You can join the Goodreads group and find other participants HERE.

An Underrated Book

Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen. This is one of my favourite books ever, but even though I rated it 5 stars, Goodreads doesn’t seem to agree with an average rating of 3.66 stars

A Book Set in School

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Sure, it’s a school for assassins, but… This book has been in pretty much all my recent posts. There is a reason for this. Read it.

A Creepy Book

The Diviners by Libba Bray. I know, I recommend this one a lot, too. But this book is one of the few that kept me up all night reading and when I finished, I still couldn’t sleep for nightmares!

A Trilogy

The Winners Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski. This is my favourite trilogy… so far. I’ve read some really great first books of a trilogy lately, so that might change soon

A Book You Think Others Should Read ASAP

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. I know it’s not out yet, but as soon as it is… SPOILERS, SPOILERS EVERYWHERE for the night is dark and full of spoilers… (relevant as every episode of GoT  season 6 was spoiled for me, even though I’d watch the episode the day it came out).

A Fantasy Book

Ruined by Amy Tintera. I read this one when it came out and I NEED THE SEQUELS! This has such an interesting fantasy world yet deals with contemporary issues like racism and other forms of discrimination. Plus there are LGBTQIA+ characters. What more could you want?

A Book with Little to No Romance

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. Did someone say empowering female protagonist AND amazing female friendship? I think so!

A Standalone

The Reluctant Jillaroo by Kaz Delaney. I’m not usually one for YA contemporary books, but this is a super cute romance set in country Australia and I’m completely in love!

Your Favourite Survival Story

Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick. I admit, this is pretty much the only ‘survival’ story I’ve read. But it was AWESOME.

Your Favourite Book Friendship

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. Florian and Emilia just make my heart melt!

A Book Set Outside of the US, or That Features Travel/Vacation

The Princess and the Captain by Anne-Laurie Bondoux. This is the most epic fantasy adventure I have ever read. With a dog. #SOLD

A Book with your Favourite Empowering Female Character

Maid of Secrets by Jennifer McGowan. Spy and personal assassin to Queen Elizabeth the First? I think that’s pretty badass.
